Brookline Declares Heat Emergency Through Saturday
Brookline Public Health declared a heat emergency from Thursday, Aug. 6, through Saturday, Aug. 8, opening cooling centers around town as a stretch of dangerous heat moves into the region.
TOWN HALL
The town's Public Health Department issued the heat emergency Wednesday, covering the three-day stretch from Thursday through Saturday. The declaration triggers cooling center openings across Brookline; residents can find locations and hours through the town's alert system. The announcement follows a summer that has already brought flooding, storm closures and a newly adopted climate plan to town business, and it comes as forecasts point toward a high near 90 degrees heading into the weekend.
COMMUNITY & ARTS
The Public Library of Brookline keeps its summer slate moving this week. On Saturday, Aug. 8, librarian and origami expert Jingting leads an introductory paper-folding program, while the library's regular Adult Crafternoon also returns that day for residents who want to drop in and work on their own projects. On Thursday, Aug. 13, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society brings its Plantmobile to the library as part of the ongoing Plant a Seed, Read! summer reading program. Not every session is running as planned: this week's Community Catch-up drop-in at the Putterham branch has been canceled.
