BROOKLINE — The Brookline School Committee voted 7-0 to approve a $20,000 one-time early retirement incentive for Brookline Educators Union Unit A members. Superintendent Wong said the incentive, expected to draw five to ten takers, would generate modest payroll savings but "will not close the budget gap" as the district builds its fiscal 2027 budget. Deputy Superintendent Robin Benoit briefed the committee on a mandatory state DESE district review, with a site visit set for the last week of March and a public report due three to six months later.
Member Bob Weintraub said he shared concerns about the review's subjectivity, drawing on his NEASC experience, while Wong said she had unsuccessfully sought a one-year delay. The FY27 budget's projected override rate stood at 6.97 percent, with an updated figure due January 22.
