School Committee · Meeting of January 15, 2026

Brookline's Policy Subcommittee moves to rewrite the school district's finance rules for the first time in over 40 years. The draft, prepared by a member identified as Mariah, would let staff shift money between budget "cost centers" without prior approval, reporting transfers after the fact, while keeping a $10,000 threshold for new programs. Members said a scholarship account had quietly grown to "millions of dollars" without being reported to the committee, prompting outreach to the Massachusetts Attorney General's office and a proposal to stop accepting new scholarship gifts in favor of the Brookline Community Foundation.

Finance director Susan flagged a separate $450,000 duplicate line item, called "human error." Member Jesse Hefter also presented a revised instructional materials policy tied to a resolution he raised last spring. No votes were taken on either policy; both head to staff review before a possible February vote.
