Finance Committee · Meeting of January 20, 2026

Brookline's School Committee Finance Subcommittee unanimously recommended a gentler, phased tuition increase for children of non-resident district employees. The rate would rise 5 percent annually, from $3,712 in fiscal 2027 to $3,897 in fiscal 2028 and $4,092 in fiscal 2029, with a 10 percent discount for a second child. Committee member Sarah said the previously floated schedule "felt a little bit steep," while Kelsey argued "I don't see anything magic about three" years and favored a steadier year-over-year climb.

Staff presenter Mariah noted the fee has slipped to about 12 percent of average in-district non-salary spending, down from a historical 16 percent benchmark before COVID-19. The total three-year revenue difference between options is less than $230,000, against a roughly $150 million district budget. The recommendation heads to the full School Committee on Thursday, January 22.
