Brookline's School Committee approved a $149.8 million fiscal 2027 budget tied to a still-undecided Select Board override. The vote was 8-0 with one abstention, after a motion to cut off debate failed 4-4 with one abstention. Superintendent Bella Wong said the proposal reflects a $5.8 million reduction from the initial $155.6 million request and warned that a failed override would mean cutting 210.3 full-time positions, "14.5 percent of all staff." A mid-tier 86 percent funding option would still require $2,502,222 in cuts, including eliminating the conservatory program for grades six through eight and reducing grades four and five music to once a week.
Member Bob Weintraub argued requiring administrators to teach one class each could save "$300,000 to $400,000." An override vote is set for May 5.
