Select Board OKs $4M for 99 Kent Street
Board of Selectmen 2026-09-16 Part 2 · Meeting of September 16, 2026
Brookline commits $4 million to save affordability at 99 Kent Street senior housing. The Select Board voted 5-0 to grant Affordable Housing Trust Fund money to Winn Companies for a rehabilitation of the 117-unit, 55-and-older building, extending affordability on 115 units for 99 years before current terms expire in 2027. Housing Advisory Board Chair Roger Blood said the town's zero-interest investment works out to about $35,000 per unit, down from an initial $6.5 million ask.
Winn's Lauren Canapari said the company "really want[s] to be able to say yes" to matching state funds, with a pre-application due September 24 and full application in December. The board also acknowledged a Winn letter capping rent increases at 3 percent for two rent-burdened households at the company's separate Village at Brookline property. Separately, the board approved a $1.26 million DPW dump truck and excavator lease and a fire chief contract amendment restoring pay parity with the police chief.
