Brookline board lifts affordable housing fund cap
Board of Selectmen · Meeting of September 30, 2026
Brookline board scraps cap on affordable housing fund, advances crypto kiosk ban. The Select Board voted 5-0 to remove a $5 million threshold that had been limiting free cash contributions to the town's Affordable Housing Trust Fund, a change officials said would have added roughly $1.4 million to the fund in 2024 alone. The board also backed a November town meeting warrant article banning cryptocurrency kiosks, after presenters said Brookline's five machines were tied to about 10 reported scams in two years, including one victim who lost up to $350,000.
"The last thing you'd expect is for the safety measure you took to end up with all your money irreversibly gone, sent to a scammer," petitioner Natan Shapiro told the board. Separately, the board heard the $211.9 million Pierce School rebuild is roughly 50 percent complete and on budget, and proclaimed October 19 "Party of a Century Day" ahead of a Boston Post Cane ceremony honoring Brookline's oldest resident. No vote was taken on reappointing Transportation Board member Nancy Moore.
