BROOKLINE — The Brookline School Committee elected Bob Weintraub chair in a 5-4 vote over outgoing chair Val Frias, days after Brookline's override passed. Members also elected Danna Perry vice chair 9-0 and voted unanimously not to participate in the state school choice program for 2026-27, citing a roughly $5,000 per-student reimbursement rate members called outdated. Member Jesse Hefter reported non-salary expenses at just under $22 million against a $33 million budget, projecting about $8 million unspent by year's end: "just wanted to report a green situation as of May 8th." Deputy Superintendent Susan Givens said the district has more than 30 open positions and has processed over 400 summer hires.
The committee also honored teachers Jen Nixon and Carolyn Castellano with the Brookline Education Foundation's Caverly Award and recognized senior Finch Ferreira for a $4,000 state LGBTQ+ leadership scholarship.
