School Committee · Meeting of May 13, 2026
Brookline School Committee elected Bob Weintraub chair in a 5-4 vote over outgoing chair Val Frias at its May 13 reorganization meeting. Danna Perry was elected vice chair 9-0, and Betsy Fitzpatrick was confirmed as secretary. Member Jesse Hefter reported the district had spent just under $22 million of a $33 million non-salary budget, projecting about $8 million unspent by year's end, saying the district is "in pretty good shape in terms of actually being under budget." The committee then voted unanimously not to participate in the state's school choice program for 2026-27, with Weintraub calling the state's $5,000-per-student reimbursement "ridiculous" given per-pupil costs he said run closer to $26,000 to $27,000.
The Brookline Education Foundation also presented its 2026 Caverly Award to Jen Mathis of Ruffin Ridley School and Carolyn Castellano of Brookline High School.
