School Committee · Meeting of April 30, 2026

Brookline School Committee voted to back two Town Meeting warrant articles while warning that an override failure could cost 58 more school jobs. Superintendent Bella Wong said the district has already issued layoff notices tied to a net cut of 22.1 full-time positions in the fiscal 2027 budget, with the deadline for non-tenured staff extended from May 1 to May 8. Members voted 7-0, with Bob Weintraub absent, to support Article 22 urging state lawmakers to reform the Proposition 2½ tax cap, and separately backed Article 17 barring immigration enforcement from town facilities without a judicial warrant.

Kevin McKenzie, chair of the Commission for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Relations, said his panel voted six to zero, with one abstention, to recommend a new student civil rights policy, but the committee took no vote on that policy Thursday, with members still debating how it applies to schools "during the school day."
