BROOKLINE — The Brookline School Committee voted 7-0 to adopt an updated civil rights policy and appointed Karen Schmuckler as Deputy Superintendent for the Office of Student Services on a three-year contract. The committee also approved, 6-0, a renewed memorandum of understanding with Steps to Success Inc., whose board chair Rachel Goodman and executive director Nia Jacobs attended, and backed a town-school Memorandum of Agreement drafted with Town Administrator Chaz Carey, pending Select Board sign-off. Member Jesse Hefter said "we wait and wait and wait and weeks and months go by" on unanswered committee requests, prompting a sharp reply from a district administrator identified only as Bella, who said "I resent being tracked from meeting to meeting." The meeting closed with tributes to departing members Andy Liu and Mariah Nobrega before the board voted 6-0 to enter executive session.
